The pandemic forced a year of remote-school upon every Indian kid and other kids across the globe.
On a whim one day, I googled "Math NCERT Textbook Class 6" and was disappointed with what I saw.
NCERT has its textbooks available freely online, which is good but,
If I’m a kid trying to download my textbook, this is what I would have to deal with.
In the world I want to live in, if I google "Math NCERT Textbook Class 6', the first link should be a link to a website that contains a web-version of the textbook.
If I want to share the page number I'm on, I should be able to copy the link in the address-bar, give it to a friend, and they should land on the same page that I'm currently at.
I felt quite strongly about it at the time and I set out to manifest that world into existence.
The best reading experience. Sure, but what does that imply?
A good place to start is what could be better about the current reading experience.
In the image below, to see what Figure 8.1 (a) refers to, you need to scroll down and find the image then scroll back up to continue reading.
In a physical textbooks, it would just take a glance since both the pages would be open at the same time.
Sometimes equations from other chapters would be referenced. Should students really have to flip 200 pages to hunt for an equation?
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just hover and see what that equation was?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the solution was hidden until you were ready to view it?
Well /r/therewasanattempt
I prioritized features, figured out the details, determined scope and proceeded to implement some of those ideas.
I put the entire 12th class Physics textbook online. You can view at readncert.com/12
5 weeks later, it became clear that converting a textbook properly to the web medium will take a significant amount of time and effort.
Time and effort that I didn’t have at the moment. I decided to abandon ship and focus on other projects (Solve Irodov).
A shoutout to my friend Pruthvi, who helped with some of the chapters.
